Understanding the Historic Club Permit Scheme in Victoria

The Historic Club Permit Scheme allows owners of classic cars & motorcycles in Victoria, to apply for a special type of vehicle registration only available to vehicles 25 years or older.

The scheme has several advantages, including reduced pricing for annual registration. However, use of the vehicle is limited to a maximum of either 45 or 90 days per year, depending on which option you choose.

To be eligible for this registration type, the vehicle owner must be a member of a Historic car or motorcycle club recognised by VicRoads. You can find a complete list of these clubs on the VicRoads website.

Club permit registration fees

VicRoads motorcycle fees are currently $181.25 for 90 days and $104.04 for 45 days. Approved Clubs set their own annual membership fee – with these generally ranging from $60 - $120 per year. On payment of your club registration, you will be issued with distinctive red plates that identify your vehicle as being club registered.

Victoria’s Club Permit scheme allows members of VicRoads approved Clubs to make limited non-commercial use of eligible historic vehicles on the road.

Responsibilities & Obligations

Club Permit holders have different responsibilities and obligations compared with standard road vehicles. The main one being that the owner needs to complete an entry in their Club Permit LogBook which specifies the name of the rider, the date the vehicle is in use and the intended destination.

If you’re pulled over by police and have not completed a valid LogBook entry, you risk a hefty fine which is currently equal to that given for a non-registered vehicle.

Switching Clubs

If you have an existing and valid club permit, you can switch to a new club without the need for a roadworthy certificate. As long as the bike is currently club registered, the vehicle can be transferred to the new club prior to expiry of the current registration period. Speak to your new club to manage the process for you. They will provide a signed document stating that you are now a member of their club. You will need to submit this form to Vicroads with your registration renewal. The whole process can now be managed online from the VicRoads website.

Valid Roadworthy Certificates

If your vehicle is currently on full Victorian registration and has reached an age of 25 years, you will require a roadworthy certificate to switch to club registration.

If your vehicle is not currently registered in Victoria, then you’ll need a valid Roadworthy Certificate to apply for a Club Permit. There are a number of Licenced Roadworthy testers in Melbourne and Machine Alley can recommend one if you need assistance.

The Machine Alley Process

Machine Alley is a VicRoads approved Club and we offer annual membership for $60 per year. We allow members to register as many vehicles as they like on a single annual membership. Each vehicle is subject to a one-off joining fee of $45.

Conveniently located in Collingwood, you can bring your car or motorcycle into the Machine Alley workshop 5 days a week. We’ll perform scrutineering and take photos of the vehicle which is required by VicRoads. Simply sign up on our website HERE, pay your fee online and book in the time you will be attending.

If you have additional queries about the Club registration process, feel free to swing past any time and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.
